Kesha Will Not Be Performing At The Billboard Music Awards
Very unfortunate news that we have to pass on to you guys today. Over the weekend, it was being reported that Kesha would perform at the Billboard Music Awards this Sunday – her first public performance since her career came to a halt in the fall of 2014. TMZ reported that Kesha would acknowledge her current legal and career problems and confront Dr. Luke in a performance that would shock the world.
It seems all that was talk until today when it was confirmed that Kesha was due to perform at the Billboard Music Awards. Keyword: was. Turns out Luke got wind of what Kesha allegedly had planned and withdrew his approval of her performance for this weekend. This comes from the man who’s legal team said Kesha is free and that slavery is not a term to be used in his legal fiasco with the ‘Tik Tok’ singer.
The following was sent to Billboard this afternoon about Kesha’s planned appearance from dick clark productions:
Kesha accepted an invitation to perform on the show and she received written approval from Dr. Luke’s record label, Kemosabe Records. Kemosabe subsequently rescinded its approval following a media report on Wednesday May 11 regarding Kesha’s appearance on the BBMAs. Unfortunately, Kesha and Kemosabe have since been unable to come to an agreement for Kesha to perform on the show.
To add insult to injury, it looks like this whole “statement act” wasn’t even in Kesha’s plans. Hours after news broke that she would no longer be allowed to perform at the BBMAs, Kesha took to Instagram to release her own statement surrounding this wildly outrageous turn of events:
I was very excited to perform a tribute to Bob Dylan by singing a cover of “It ain’t me, babe” at the Billboard awards this year. I’m very sad and sorry to say I won’t be allowed to do this. I just wanted to make very clear that this performance was about me honoring one of my favorite songwriters of all time and has never had anything at all to do with Dr. Luke. I was never going to use a picture of him, speak of him or allude to my legal situation in any way. I simply wanted to sing a song I love to honor an artist I have always looked up to. thank u all for the continued support.
So what caused Luke to go back on his word? Could it be the song in question? Hardly. For one, she’s not performing her own material so there’s absolutely nothing that could compromise what Luke wants her to be seen as. Secondly, if you read through the lyrics of ‘It Ain’t Me, Baby’, it really was Kesha paying tribute and getting the chance to enjoy performing what is most likely one of her favorite songs from one of her idols.
Could it be the fact that Kesha would be seen in a different light for the first time by the world and not the drunken party girl that Luke molded her to be? It’s very much possible. We don’t know for sure, but we do know is that this is not over. The media is taking this story and running with it, and with Kesha’s just-released statement it’s going to continue to be reported about. As it should be.
For someone who is so free, it’s tough to see beyond the shackles that have her chained down. Here’s to hoping that an 11th hour deal comes into play due to all this media exposure and that Kesha’s wish will be granted Sunday night.
